STOCKHOLM - The Swedish public prosecutor announced on Wednesday that it had suspended investigations into rape charges against the founder of Wikileak

Swedish prosecutors have suspended investigations into rape charges against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange dating back to 2010 due to insufficient evidence.

Asang is an Australian and the United States is trying to arrest and try him for publishing US diplomatic documents while he is currently in detention in Britain.

"I consider all the investigative measures that have been taken have been exhausted, but the evidence is not strong enough to present an indictment," Deputy Prosecutor-General Eva Marie Pearson told reporters.
The investigation began after a Swedish woman in August 2010 accused Assange of raping her, which he denied, stressing that the charges were aimed at defaming him.

Pearson added that my assessment is that the evidence has been weakened in such a way that there is no longer any reason to continue investigating the case.

Swedish authorities closed the investigation for rape against Assange in 2017, arguing that it could no longer proceed due to inaccessibility but the case reopened after his arrest in Britain.

Assange was arrested in Britain when police took him from the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he has taken refuge since 2012 to avoid being deported to Sweden.

He was later sentenced to 50 weeks' imprisonment for “violating the conditions of his release” when he took refuge in the embassy.

In 2010, WikiLeaks published thousands of secret military documents on the truth of the US war on Iraq and Afghanistan. They committed it in Afghanistan, provoking US resentment against Assange.
