London (CNN) - José Mourinho has been hired as the next head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, the English football club announced.

The Portuguese coach will replace Mauricio Pochettino, who was fired on Tuesday only six months after taking the London-based team to the Champions League final.

“In José we have one of the most successful football technicians. He has great experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has earned honors in every club he has trained. We believe it will bring energy and confidence to the locker rooms, ”Tottenham president Daniel Levy said in a statement.

This is Mourinho's third period as coach in an English Premier League club. He was in Chelsea twice and more recently Manchester United.

The experienced coach has also managed FC Porto and Inter Milan, leading both sides to success in the most prestigious club competition in Europe, the Champions League, as well as the Spanish giant Real Madrid, where he won the title of the league and the Copa del Rey.

"I am excited to join a club with a great heritage and such passionate followers," Mourinho said in a statement provided by the club. “The quality of both the team and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me. ”

Mourinho will have big shoes to fill. Last season, Pochettino and Spurs enjoyed a remarkable race to the Champions League final before losing 2-0 at Liverpool in Madrid.

The Argentine coach was hired in May 2014, and the Spurs qualified regularly for the Champions League during his tenure.

However, this season, the club has managed to take only 14 points from 12 league games, dropping to 14th in the 20-team league, and was eliminated from the League Cup by the League Two team, Colchester United .

The Spurs were also beaten at home by Bayern Munich, with the German team winning 7-2 in a Champions League group match.

“Mauricio and his coaching staff will always be part of our history. I have the greatest admiration for the way he faced difficult times away from home while we were building the new stadium and for the warmth and positivity he brought to us, ”said Levy.

“I would like to thank him and his coaching staff for all they have contributed. You will always be welcome here. ”
