Moscow-Sana

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reiterated the need to resolve the crisis in Syria in accordance with UN resolution 2254 and the eradication of terrorism in Idlib and to make efforts for reconstruction and return of displaced Syrians to their country.

"Russia continues to work to resolve the crisis in Syria on the basis of Resolution 2254 and on the results of the Sochi Conference on Syrian National Dialogue and the Astana formula," Lavrov told a news conference with his Bahraini counterpart Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa in Moscow today.

Resolution 2254, unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council in December 2015, affirms that it is the Syrians who determine their country's future without any external interference and that terrorist organizations are outside any political process.

Regarding the situation in the Gulf region, Lavrov said that "Russia has taken steps over many years with regard to the security of the Gulf region. If these steps were supported, we would have avoided escalation today."

Regarding the Washington Declaration on Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Lavrov affirmed that it is rejected and exacerbates the situation in the region.

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reiterated in a press conference yesterday the United States blatant bias to the entity of the Israeli occupation, where he announced that the US administration does not consider the Israeli settlements contrary to international law, ignoring all international resolutions, especially Security Council resolution 2334 of 2016, which calls for an immediate end to the occupation For all settlement operations in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
