After re-election in Canada: Trudeau presents record Cabinet - with 37 Ministers

2019-11-21T18:26:03.971Z

The new Canadian Cabinet is as big as ever with almost 40 ministers. Prime Minister Trudeau has created new posts - inter alia, for intra-Canadian understanding.

One month ago, the election took place in Canada, where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was re-elected but lost the absolute majority. Now Trudeau has presented his new cabinet in Ottawa. The Cabinet has a record number of 37 members - with about the same number of men and women.

Many ministers have new posts, others have been added, Trudeau said. "I am pleased that we can do the work as the Canadians have asked us in the election," he said. The aim is, for example, to bring the country together, to focus on economic growth for the middle class and to combat climate change. "That's our focus - and this is our team for it," says Trudeau.

Former Secretary of State Chrystia Freeland, for example, is the Deputy Prime Minister in the new Cabinet and responsible for the understanding between the government and the individual regional governments of the Canadian provinces. Thus Trudeau declared the intra-Canadian understanding as a matter of chief concern.

Trudeau's Liberal Party lost its absolute majority in the election and now heads a minority government. Especially in western Canada, the Liberal Party had lost much of its popularity - the oil-rich provinces of West and Central Canada had expressed frustration over Trudeau's energy and climate policies.

The Premier of the Western Canadian province of Alberta, Jason Kenney, was confident after the Cabinet announcement. His government hopes to find "matches" with the government of Trudeau - "to create jobs and growth, including through responsible resource development, and fairness in the Canadian Federation."

Conservative party leader Andrew Scheer, who lost to Trudeau in the election, criticized the cabinet for being "bloated."
