China today condemned repeated US provocations in the South China Sea, the latest of which was the passage of two US warships this week near islands in the sea.
"China sent military ships to identify and monitor US ships and asked them to leave," the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Command said in a statement.
In its statement, the Southern Command dismissed Washington's argument for freedom of navigation as a pretext.
On Monday, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian called on the US military to stop flexing muscles in the South China Sea and avoid adding new doubts about Taiwan.
