(CNN) - When 16-year-old environmental activist Greta Thunberg is not busy challenging world leaders to reduce their carbon footprint or mobilizing young people to fight for the weather, are they ... traveling through time?

That is the consensus in social networks, at least. Insightful users dug up a 19th-century photo of a girl who looks eerily similar to the 21st-century teenager.

The 'double' of Greta around 1898 looking for gold.

“A 120-year-old photo awakens theories that the climate activist and environmental heroine, @GretaThunberg, is, in fact, a 'time traveler' who has traveled through time to save our planet! Wishing you all the best and success in your mission to save the Earth. We can use the help we can get! ”Someone wrote.

"It's safe to say that @GretaThunberg must have used a solar-powered time machine to travel in time," another joked.

A third user proposed a much bleaker theory: the photo is of the dystopian future.

Look more closely:

The 'doppelganger' of Thunberg is one of the three children in the photo of 1898. According to the digital archives of the Libraries of the University of Washington, they are looking for gold in the Canadian territory of the Yukon.

As if he were going to approach a mine.

The adolescent pioneer has not responded to the hustle, as she sailed for Portugal on her zero-emission yacht. But he did share this black and white photo before the theories of time travel began. Maybe she saw it coming.

Or maybe he only has one of those timeless faces.

I want to thank all the people who I've met I North America for their incredible hospitality. And thank you all for your amazing support!
