The Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General to Syria, Ged Pederson, stressed that the Constitution belongs to the Syrian people alone and that the work of the Constitutional Discussion Committee in Geneva is an important step towards finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria.
In a briefing today to the Security Council, Pederson said that the 150 members of the 150-member constitutional committee, representing the Syrian-backed delegation, the delegation of the other parties, and the civil society delegation, each met in Geneva at the end of last month to launch its work under the leadership and ownership of Syria. The 15-member mini-committee will meet again in Geneva between the 25th and 29th of this month .
Pederson noted that the Committee's discussions were professional and successful and that its work is based on fundamental principles that include respect for the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Syria in accordance with the UN Charter and Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution 2254, which contributes to a political solution to the crisis in Syria, while the role of the United Nations is limited to facilitating The work of the Committee.
