Nagoya - Japan - Sana

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Japan should recognize Russia's sovereignty over the South Kuril Islands before concluding a peace treaty.

Commenting on an interview by Japanese Cabinet Secretary Yoshihida Suga, he said that the government will continue negotiations with Russia on the peace treaty based on its original position that the regional problem should be resolved first and then the peace treaty is concluded, Lavrov said, according to TASS news agency. The list between us is based on the 1956 Declaration, which clearly recognizes the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Russia over all of its territory, including this territory.

"The US-Japan military-political alliance creates obstacles to the conclusion of a peace treaty with Moscow and the improvement of relations between Russia and Japan," Lavrov said.

Lavrov explained that Washington does not hide through its behavior in the world and the Pacific that it considers Russia and China as a major threat to it and that all military alliances, whether with Japan, Australia or South Korea will be built to respond to these threats and challenges, pointing out that this fact contradicts Tokyo's assurances to Moscow that its alliance With Washington is not directed against Russia.

Lavrov is currently in Japan to attend the meeting of foreign ministers of the Group of 20 nations.
