The head of Russia's foreign intelligence service, Sergei Nareshkin, said the United States was involved in recent events in Bolivia.
"The United States needed a crisis in Bolivia to change the policy of this country," Nareshkin was quoted by Sputnik news agency as saying.
Bolivian President Evo Morales, who announced his resignation earlier this month, revealed on Monday that the United States opposes his return to the country in a continuation of its flagrant interference in its affairs.
Morales' comments came at a time when at least eight people were shot dead by Bolivia's putschist security forces during protests by supporters in the western city of Alto.
On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called on the Bolivian interim authorities to work for the unification of society in Bolivia and not to spread hatred.
