(CNN) - As the Thanksgiving week begins, a record number of travelers will face three storms across the country that will add to the stress of the holidays.

A storm will hit the east and affect travel this Sunday, another will hit the midwest on Tuesday and a third will move west on Wednesday.

Although the weather is subject to change in the coming days, this is the current forecast to better prepare the trip to Grandma's house this weekend:

Storms continue throughout the eastern United States

Freezing rain will fall in parts of the northeast on Sunday, with the possibility of snowfall in the same region as the day progresses, the National Weather Service said.

The rain will move away from the northeast region on Monday morning, but the snow will persist, he said.

In the east, a storm system will cause heavy rains on Sunday in several cities, from Philadelphia and New York to Boston, while heavy snowfall is expected in the north of the New England region to the north of Maine.

On the west coast, a winter storm could affect travel with a heavy snowfall possible over the mountains, the National Weather Service said. Heavy rains are expected in southern California starting Tuesday.

Snow will hit the Midwest

A front will move eastward, from the Pacific to the northern plains, over the weekend, the National Climate Service said. By Monday, the front will be in the Great Superior Lakes and throughout the Midwest.

On Tuesday, snowfall is expected from the central plains to the Great Superior Lakes. It is also possible that snow on Wednesday in the high plains of the south and Thursday in the north of the United States.

Chicago will start with rain on Tuesday afternoon, and then it will turn into snow late that day. Snowfall should stop in Chicago on Wednesday morning.

Parts of Wisconsin and Michigan will receive a round of heavy snow on Tuesday and early Wednesday before clearing.

The travel season with more movement

All these threats of bad weather will be mixed with an increase in travel.

The United States Automobile Association (AAA) expects this year to register the second largest number of travelers in at least a decade. The organization predicts an increase of 1.6 million travelers compared to last year, and most will do it by car thanks to the fall in gasoline prices.

The highest traffic congestion is expected on Wednesday. Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Houston and San Francisco could observe more than three times than usual.
