The humanitarian crisis in the civil war country of Yemen could become even worse. According to the UN delegation of the Red Cross, apart from malaria and cholera, a dengue fever epidemic has now broken out.

In the civil war country Yemen, according to the Red Cross, a dengue fever epidemic has broken out. "We are extremely worried about reports of the outbreak of dengue fever that is still causing cholera," Robert Mardini, head of the Red Cross's UN delegation, told reporters in New York. More than 3500 people are therefore ill in Yemen.

In the port city of Hodeida, between the end of October and the beginning of November, 50 people allegedly died of the dangerous fever disease, Mardini said. "It's a big challenge to control this epidemic."

The region around Hodeida in the west of the country was particularly hard hit by the dengue epidemic, more than 2000 people are already affected, said Mardini. According to the Red Cross, nearly 3,000 people in the same region suffer from malaria.

In Yemen, since 2015, war has raged between the troops supported by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other Arab states by President Abd Rabbo Mansur Hadi and the Houthi rebels behind Iran. According to the UN, more than 10,000 people have been killed in the conflict, including thousands of civilians. More than three million people were forced to flee.
