The Food Safety Center stated that it has been closely following the incident of contaminated O157: H7 E.coli produced by Salinas in California, and has suspended the import and sale of romaine lettuce produced in the region, and issued instructions. The involved importer, Wing Kee Food Co., Ltd., stopped selling and recalling the affected products. The Centre announced today that a total of 11 lettuce products were found to be infected. Suppliers involved include Wing Kee Foods Limited and City Super Limited. The Centre urges members of the public not to consume the affected products. If the industry holds such products, they should stop using or selling them immediately.
A spokesman for the Food Safety Center said that Wing Kee has suspended and removed the affected products according to the instructions of the center, and has started recycling. Members of the public can call Wing Kee Foods Limited (Tel: 2796 3111) and City Super Limited (Tel: 2736 3866) during office hours to inquire about the recall of these products. The spokesman added that the Centre has stepped up the sampling of romaine lettuce from the United States at the import and retail levels, and will notify the industry of the incident, and continue to follow up the incident and take appropriate action.
The spokesman also said that E. coli can spread to humans through water and food transmission. Drinking contaminated water or eating uncooked and contaminated food can infect the bacteria and cause intestinal infectious diseases. Some infected people may have intestinal bleeding and serious complications such as hemolytic uremia.
