Four people were killed and about 150 others injured in a strong earthquake in western Albania today.
Four people were killed, one in the town of Corbin, 50 kilometers from the capital, the other in the Adriatic city of Durres, and two others, one of them a woman, when a building collapsed in the town of Toman, 36 kilometers north of Tirana, the Associated Press reported. Another 150 rescuers and rescue teams are working to rescue detainees under the rubble.
The epicenter of the 6.4 magnitude quake was located in the Adriatic Sea, 34 kilometers southwest of Tirana, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
A spokeswoman for the Albanian Defense Ministry told AFP the damage was significant.
A three-storey hotel in Durres collapsed, another building in the city center was badly damaged and sources reported major damage in the city of Toman.
The seismological institute said a first tremor occurred, followed by other aftershocks.
An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit the country on September 21, causing damage to about 500 houses and destroying several others.
