Surgeons at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi with the kidney removed.

(CNN) - A group of surgeons has extracted a 7.4 kilogram kidney, the equivalent of the weight of two newborn babies, from a patient in India.

It is believed to be the heaviest kidney that has been removed in that country, and the third largest in the world.

The patient, a 56-year-old man from the Indian capital New Delhi, suffers from autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). A genetic condition that causes the development of cysts in the kidneys.

The surgery, which was carried out at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi at the end of October, lasted approximately two hours, and the removal of the organ took 30 minutes.

It is not unusual for patients with ADPKD to develop large kidneys, but Dr. Sachin Kathuria, a urology consultant at the hospital and the main surgeon for the procedure, said this is the largest he has seen.

"To our knowledge, this is the third heaviest that has been removed," Kathuria told CNN.

“One in the United States weighed 9 kilograms and the other in the Netherlands… it was 8.7. We believe that it is the largest that has been eliminated in India, ”he added.

Patient hoping for a kidney transplant

The decision to perform the surgery was made after the patient complained of continuous pain and increased renal failure.

"The patient suffered from kidney failure, pain in the side (e) infections that did not respond to the medication because antibiotics could not penetrate the cysts."

“The cysts were at risk of bleeding, which can cause uncontrolled bleeding. I had trouble breathing because of the size of the kidneys that pressed other organs, ”Kathuria said.

At the age of 60, between 40% and 50% of people with ADPKD will develop kidney failure and need dialysis or a kidney transplant, according to the UK National Health Service.

“It is not always necessary to remove the kidneys in patients with this disease. Only if there is an infection or bleeding from tumors or cysts, ”said Kathuria. “But in this case, the cyst had grown around the kidney and replaced it. It occupied almost the entire area of the abdomen. ”

The patient has recovered and was discharged. He is currently on dialysis and waiting for a kidney transplant.

"His other kidney is bigger but we can't remove it because he is on permanent dialysis," Kathuria said. "Considering an extra extraction is only viable if there is a kidney donor or if the infections and symptoms get so bad that we have no other choice."
