Violence against women is a common problem in Turkey. According to the platform "We will stop the murder of women" 440 women were killed by men last year - in more than a quarter of the cases the spouses were the perpetrators. By comparison, in 2011, 121 cases became known. Women's rights groups regularly accuse the Turkish judiciary of too leniently punishing perpetrators of violence against women.
