(CNN) - A 46-year-old construction worker in China who suffered from seizures turned out to have tapeworms in his brain, suspected of eating undercooked meat.

About a month ago, Zhu (a pseudonym for the patient), from Luzhou, in eastern Zhejiang Province, bought pork and lamb for cooking in a spicy broth, according to a report published last week by the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University.

A few days later, he began to feel dizzy and suffered headaches during the day, according to the report. During the night, while sleeping, Zhu experienced symptoms similar to those of a seizure, similar to epilepsy.

Zhu's coworkers found him during a seizure and sent him quickly to a nearby hospital, where a CT scan showed "intercranial calcifications" and skull injuries. However, Zhu rejected more tests, not wanting to spend more money, and returned home, according to the report.

However, the symptoms did not disappear and Zhu continued to experience seizures. Finally, he went to the hospital of Zhejiang University, where doctors performed an MRI and diagnosed neurocysticercosis, you had in the brain.

After hearing that Zhu had eaten a hot soup recently, the hospital's chief doctor speculated that the pig and the lamb could have been infested with tapeworm larvae, which could have entered Zhu's digestive tract because the meat had not been cooked. adequately.

"I only simmered the meat," Zhu said in the report. "The bottom of the pot with the spicy broth was red, so you couldn't see if the meat had cooked well."

Zhu has since recovered, after doctors removed tapeworms and reduced pressure on his brain, according to the report.

Neurocysticercosis is a parasitic infection that is contracted when someone ingests tapeworm eggs that have passed into the feces of another person who has an intestinal tapeworm. The larvae leave the eggs to the muscles and brain tissues, where they form cysts, such as the "calcifications" seen on Zhu CT scans.

Cysticercosis infections occur worldwide, although these parasitic invasions of the human body occur mainly in rural areas of countries where pigs can roam and where sanitation practices are deficient, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of USA UU. (CDC).

Although these infections can be rare among people living in countries where pigs have no contact with human feces, cysticercosis can be acquired anywhere in the world, including the United States and other western nations. Only in June, a New York resident reported experiencing hallucinations and disorientation, which doctors believed was due to a brain tumor, until they discovered a baby in her brain.
