Director of the Non-Proliferation and Arms Control Section of the Russian Foreign Ministry Vladimir Yermakov said that his country supports the project of establishing a zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East.
"It is very important to build on the experiences of WMD-free zones that have already been established," Yermakov was quoted by Sputnik as saying, adding that Moscow was positively evaluating the outcome of the New York conference on a WMD-free zone in the Middle East.
Yermakov pointed out that the statement of the New York Conference includes an invitation without a time limit for the countries of the Middle East to join this project.
The Permanent Representative of Syria to the United Nations, Dr. Bashar Jaafari, reiterated in a statement read on the 19th of this month before the meeting of the first session of the conference on the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East on Syria's call to establish a nuclear-weapon-free zone In the Middle East and to prevent the risk of proliferation, pointing out that this can only be subject to all activities of the Israeli occupation entity and its nuclear facilities to the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The conference was held with the aim of establishing a zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East in New York from 18 to 22 this month with the participation of a number of countries in the region in addition to Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.
