Schools: Hamburg threatens the end of summer vacation agreement

2019-11-27T15:53:08.038Z

Bavaria has enjoyed a special arrangement for the summer holidays for years - and wants to cling to the anger of other federal states. Hamburg responded with a special greeting to the Free State.

After the cancellation of Bavaria to a reorganization of the summer holidays Hamburg threatens now with the end of all collusion between the states. "This shot from Bavaria will set off backwards: Now each country will set the summer vacation alone, just like Bavaria," said Hamburg's Senator of Education Ties Rabe (SPD) of the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" and added: "Have fun on the long Bavarian highways. "

Rabe responded to a sentence of the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU), who would have almost lost in the dispute over Bavaria's exit from the planned National Education Council: "The Bavarian Abitur remains Bavarian, by the way, as the holiday periods remain, we do not want them either Söder had said on Sunday - a refusal to reorganize the complex holiday calendar in Germany, which is currently being sought by Hamburg and other federal states.

In order to avoid congestion on the highways and to provide hotels with an even load, the federal states have agreed during the holidays on a so-called rolling system. It divides the countries into groups, which start one after the other in the summer holidays and alternate with early and later holidays - every year at a different time.

Only Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg have not participated in this change so far, where summer holidays traditionally begin at the end of July / beginning of August.

However, the holiday dates are fixed according to this division only until 2024. The federal states have been negotiating over the years from 2025 to 2030 since October. In addition to Hamburg, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia also announced that they wanted to work for a new order.

The Bavarian insistence on the late summer vacation also meets with criticism in North Rhine-Westphalia: "Every law and every regulation should be reviewed from time to time to see whether it is still appropriate, timely and a fair solution between the countries," said Yvonne Gebauer (FDP), Minister of Education in NRW. In the complicated summer holiday regulation there is apparently a need for discussion.

Also in Lower Saxony one sees no reason for a Bavarian special way: "Only together we can find the best solution," said the Ministry of Education on request. The summer holidays were to be agreed upon by the Conference of Ministers of Education - "from a pedagogical point of view".

Above all, Berlin and Hamburg had set themselves the task of extending the summer vacation less in the future. According to the proposals, the summer holidays should in principle not begin before 1 July, the different dates of the countries should be closer together and the annual shifts should be as small as possible.

Recently, the period in which the first countries start their summer holidays and the last countries send their students back to class has been over 85 days. Some federal states saw disadvantages for their students: Thus, jumps from a late holiday to an early holiday shortened the intervening school year. This has a negative effect on the learning time of the students, the burden on the teachers and the period of the final exams.
