Hertha BSC Berlin is to become a "Big City Club". That's what investor Lars Windhorst wants, and he wants to invest more than 200 million euros in the last little sparkling average club. In order to make the coaching bank shine, Windhorst Jürgen Klinsmann, who has only been a member of the supervisory board of Hertha for a few weeks, has given a "huge push".
At least until the end of the season, the Californian Swabian takes over the team. A real "big player", who was supposedly still in conversation as coach of Ecuador. With Andreas Köpke brings Klinsmann equal to the goalkeeper coach, who already belonged to his successful staff at the 2006 World Cup. Angela Merkel and Jürgen Klinsmann know each other well. Klinsmann has made the chancellor a national team fanatic, she has awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit, held the laudatio in the appointment as Honorary Captain, invited him to dinner with Barack Obama. All this, although Klinsmann has previously supported Gerhard Schröder. Later, however, the new Hertha coach once said about Merkel: "I would like to take her with me and she will become the new US president."
Well, she did not, instead, just after Klinsmann's saying, someone who spreads photomontages with his head on the body of boxer movie character Rocky Balboa. Merkel, on the other hand, is still the Chancellor, and, as she surprisingly clearly said on Wednesday in the Bundestag , she also wants to stay there until the regular end of this parliamentary term.
I have to admit at this point that yesterday in the Newsletter I expressed a different expectation, namely that Merkel would simply ignore the GroKo persistence in the budgetary debate. But listen, hear, the Chancellor expressly encouraged the SPD to stay aboard. "I'll be there, fine if you are," she called to the coalition. (Note, by the way, the official bonus to Friedrich Merz: "If you want me, I'm there.")
It was 9:48. The breaking news of the Germany comeback of the supposed master motivator Klinsmann came only shortly thereafter. It would not surprise me, however, when the Chancellor yesterday, with the news of the Hertha coup, thought back to the Klinsmann summer fairytale weeks of 2006 yesterday: a rush in black-red-gold, seemingly relaxed, a happy one Host to the world.
And today, only 13 years later? "In our society, there are frictions that must make us restless," Merkel has to state and asks: "What's going on in our society?"
If Merkel really wants to finish her term completely, then hopefully not because she thinks it's just her duty. Being there is not everything. Then she should spend a lot of effort in the remaining time to smooth the frictions. For this Germany does not need a summer fairy tale, but quite real strategies against hate, hate, brutalization. The recently adopted nine-point plan of the Federal Government can only be a start.

Angela Merkel also talked a lot about NATO in the Bundestag on Wednesday, and she was very kind-hearted. The alliance has lost nothing in importance for Germany, she stressed - and thus clearly contradicted Emmanuel Macron , who had recently declared the Alliance on its 70th birthday for "brain dead". On Thursday, France's President in Paris receives NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg .
