Sydney-Sana
Thousands of Australian students took part in demonstrations today calling for tougher action to combat climate change, which is contributing to the forest fire crisis in their country.
Participants at the Sydney demonstration denounced the government for not doing enough to tackle Australia's forest fire crisis and held up banners reading: "The climate is changing, why don't we?"
Smoke from forest fires in the state of New South Wales formed a thick coat of fog over the heads.
The demonstrations in Sydney and other major Australian cities were the first in a series of protests by students from around the world to demand more efforts from governments to protect the environment.
Australia has been battling forest fires for weeks, which have killed at least four people, left about 2.5 million acres of farmland and destroyed more than 500 homes.
Data released today showed that greenhouse gas emissions in Australia were virtually unchanged in the 12 months to June.
