(CNN Spanish) - The judge of the Supreme Court of Justice of Brazil, Rogério Schietti, on Friday revoked the arrest warrant issued against the former president of Paraguay Horacio Cartes. In their request, the ex-plaintiff's lawyers affirmed that “the coercive measure is illegal and disproportionate” and requested the revocation of provisional custody.
On November 19, the Brazilian Federal Police issued 20 orders for preventive and temporary detention: one of them was against Cartes. Six days later, the former president made himself available to the Prosecutor's Office of Paraguay. In documents submitted to the Public Ministry, the ex-president declared himself willing to collaborate in an eventual investigation into his ties with Messer, detained in Brazil.
Cartes is investigated by Brazilian justice within the framework of Operation Patron, for suspicions of integrating a secret society with Darío Messer, considered one of the largest money changers involved in the well-known Lava Jato case.
According to the Brazilian Public Ministry, the ex-president was key so that Messer could remain in hiding for many months, presumably in charge of his dubious business.
María Leticia Bóveda Andrada, a Paraguayan lawyer from Darío Messer, questioned the report of the Brazilian Prosecutor's Office and maintains that her client is innocent.
