(CNN) - Millions of travelers will encounter rain, snow or a chaotic mix of both this weekend as a winter storm moves through the Midwest and northeast United States.

More than 40 million people, from California to Maine, were under winter weather alerts on Saturday morning, CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said.

The winter storm, located in the center of the United States at that time, brought heavy snowfall to the north of the plains and the midwest, Brink said.

He added that strong wind warnings and wind warnings cover 20 million people from New Mexico to Nebraska, where winds can carry gusts of up to 136 km / h.

The storm is expected to turn northeast on Sunday, Brink said, bringing heavy snow to the interior of New England and a winter mix and rain to the coastal cities.

New York City is forecast to receive up to 10 centimeters of snow mixed with rain by Monday, Brink said. Boston could see 15 to 20 centimeters of snow until Tuesday morning.

That turn to the east means that snow, ice and strong winds will affect trips after Thanksgiving, Sunday and Monday, the National Weather Service warned. By Saturday morning, there were already more than 400 flight cancellations and 6,000 flight delays in the US. UU., According to FlightAware.

Prior to the expected winter weather, airlines such as American and Delta had begun issuing waivers for eligible travelers who needed to change or cancel their travel plans.

American Airlines issued waivers for passengers traveling on Sunday and Monday on flights to and from the John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports in New York, as well as Newark and the airline's operations center in Philadelphia. Other cities included in the American Airlines ad are Boston, Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Toronto, in Canada.

Delta Airlines announced dispensations for 16 cities in the upper Midwest on Saturday and 22 cities in the Northeast for Sunday and Monday, including Boston airports and the New York area.

Travel affectations are likely for Sunday afternoon and Monday, the National Meteorological Service tweeted.

Sunday is of particular concern, as it is expected to be the busiest travel day in the history of the American airline industry, with a forecast of 3.1 million passengers, according to Airlines for America, a commercial airline organization. It was forecast that a record 31.6 million passengers would travel on American airlines during the Thanksgiving holiday period, 3.7% more than last year.

Another storm that hit the northeast this week has now moved to the Atlantic Ocean, Brink said.

The west coast will also be affected

A new storm system is expected to arrive in California later on Saturday, Brink said, bringing several centimeters of snow to the mountains of California and heavy rains to the coasts and valleys.

A total of generalized rains of 2 to 10.2 centimeters are forecast throughout the region, he said, but some localized areas could see more than 12.7 centimeters of rainfall over the weekend.

Areas located around 600 meters will begin to see snow on Saturday. On Sunday, residents at the highest elevations are expected to also find snow. About 60 to 90 centimeters of snow are forecast, and possibly more in localized areas.
