(CNN) - An armed man wounded 11 people early Sunday morning on Canal Street, outside the French Quarter in New Orleans, and one person was arrested near the scene but has not yet been formally charged, police said.
Ten of the victims were transported to local medical centers and one was admitted to a local hospital. Two of the victims are in critical condition, the New Orleans Police Department said.
"An individual was arrested near the scene," police said, but his possible involvement in the shooting is under investigation.
No arrests had been made until 6:30 am (7:30 am ET), authorities said.
Police received a call informing of a disturbance at 3:21 a.m. local time. When officers arrived at the scene, they were able to hear gunfire and found victims immediately, said New Orleans police spokesman Aaron Looney.
The direction of the shooting provided by the police is a few steps from the popular Bourbon Street, a street frequented by tourists.
Paramedics and state and federal police also responded to the scene.
CNN's Alta Spells contributed to this report.
