Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Malu Dreyer withdraws from the SPD leadership. "I have decided to concentrate after the party convention of the SPD on our beautiful state," said Dreyer the German Press Agency.
"I wanted to be a deputy, and I was also very happy to be acting federal chairman of our wonderful party," said the 58-year-old (read here what she says about the time in Berlin). But she had already made her decision to retreat some time ago. The two candidate duos for the SPD top had already informed them about the outcome of the membership decision at the weekend.
She had always said, "I'm primarily Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate," said Dreyer. "I said before and after the election: The SPD needs everyone, we have to fight for a strong SPD in various places." Therefore, they will continue to take responsibility at the federal level: as a coordinator of the SPD countries and Prime Minister in the committees of the party.
At the SPD membership decision on the party presidency had on Saturday, the former North Rhine-Westphalian Minister of Finance Norbert Walter Borjans and the Member of Parliament Saskia Esken prevailed with 53 percent. The competitors Olaf Scholz and Klara Geywitz received only 45 percent of the vote. Officially elected is the new double point but not yet. The congress has yet to confirm it, which, however, is considered safe.
