In the background of the term of the current State Attorney Shai Nitzan, it was announced on Monday that Attorney General Avihai Mandelblit, in closed talks, would not allow Justice Minister Amir Ohana to appoint the next attorney.

The Supreme Court has made it clear that it believes that the move should be prevented - even though it has the authority under the law. The reason for denying Mandelblit's appointment is the fact that during a transitional government, a detection committee cannot be established.

In the meantime, Ohana today presented the candidates for the post of Deputy State Attorney: Shlomo (Moomi) Lamberger, Raz Nazri, Orly Ben Ari-Ginsberg, Dan Eldad and Oshera Gas-Eisenstein.

Ohana said that "in recent weeks I have informed the counsel that I intend to appoint a deputy to the State Attorney, as the law provides, and that I have no intention of requesting the extension of the current Attorney General's office." He further argued that "there is also no likelihood of leaving the important and significant body, the prosecutor's office, without a manager to head it."

The Court responded to Minister Ohana's announcement, confirming that his opinion on the Acting Attorney was filed with the Minister. Mandelblit emphasized that because it is a sensitive position, there are unique characteristics to the way of appointment, to ensure the professional independence of the State Attorney and his independence from the governing authorities. Which he serves as a gatekeeper.

The Minister of Justice claimed that a few months ago he asked Mandelblit whether it was not time to set up a detection committee, which usually took several months. He added that "Mendelblit replied to me that it was not possible during an election period, as well as during a transitional government to establish a Detection Committee for the appointment of a permanent State Attorney, a statutory office for a six-year term."
