Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg arrived in Lisbon on Tuesday for her appearance at the Madrid Climate Conference. The 16-year-old activist arrived with her teammates in the capital of Portugal, after crossing the Atlantic from New York on the "La Vagabonde" boat, to avoid a polluting environment.

She will spend the day in Lisbon in a series of meetings with climate activists from Portugal and at rest before leaving for Madrid. More than 150 environmental activists came to support Thunberg upon her arrival on the coast. Also welcoming was Portugal's Man-of-the-Nature-Nature Party leader Andre Silva, who praised her for the important role she plays in "tackling the biggest crisis of our time." He added that "it raises awareness of an increasingly pressing issue in a way that politicians simply cannot."

Upon her arrival in Lisbon, Thunberg contacted politicians attending the conference, saying that they must act as soon as possible. "There have been so many meetings (of politicians) like this lately," Thunberg said. "You must produce something good from the conference otherwise we will run out of time. We are looking at you. The younger generation is watching you and looking forward to action. We will make sure you really do something," she clarified.

Thunberg's arrival in Lisbon comes after a dismal report by the World Meteorological Organization, which claims that the last decade was the hottest recorded so far. Portugal's Environment Minister Matos Fernandes thanked Thunberg for her letter letter last Thursday and Portuguese President Marcelo Rivello de -Souza, said it was a "great pleasure" to host her in Lisbon.

Greta Thunberg is set to join thousands of activists who are expected to march in Madrid this Friday, on the sidelines of the conference, which began yesterday. At the conference's opening, UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutierres warned that the earth had reached "the point of no return." During the conference, participants should set a common time frame for countries to implement the plans agreed at the previous climate conferences, and also find a solution to the issue of international carbon markets.
