China announced on Monday that it is suspending the examination of US aircraft and vessel requests to visit Hong Kong in response to legislation passed by the US Congress supporting protesters in a city under Beijing's rule.

The government also imposed sanctions on the U.S. headquarters of the Human Rights Watch, claiming it supports "extremist and violent" protesters in Hong Kong, and several other human rights organizations. Last week, China warned that it would take "counter-attacking measures" after President Donald Trump signed legislation passed by Democrats and Republicans. A Beijing foreign ministry spokesman said there could be more steps if the United States did not change its policy.

The US government's support, despite the president's reservations, in Hong Kong's pro-democracy protest movement is holding back talks with Beijing over a new trade agreement. According to the Axios website, cited by a source close to Trump's negotiating team, the agreement is "stuck due to Hong Kong legislation." In addition, the signing of the agreement was reportedly delayed due to the need for Chinese President Xi Jinping, who has faced the biggest challenge since coming to power in 2012, to calm the situation.

An American security official, speaking anonymously, said China's move would have no effect on US military activity. Visits to US vessels and aircraft in Hong Kong are sometimes postponed, in times of tension with China. The docking of two American ships was rejected last August. The last visit of an American battleship to Hong Kong was in April, two months before protests began due to the extradition of Hong Kong suspects to China, which, despite its cancellation, did not calm the streets. Protesters are demanding democratic reforms and investigating police violence against them.
