The Mata Yehuda rope wineries, or in other words - the "Tuscany of Israel", continue their collaboration and produce an annual regional wine festival that combines great activities, fine culinary and tourist wine that has been winding through the region's localities for 21 years in a row.

This year the festival will be held on December 28-5, mainly on weekends, and will host a variety of activities and attractions - from wine tours and surprising tastings, through live performances of music (Dana Berger, Zehava Ben and others) and to various dining events.

The veteran festival's opening event will be held this Thursday starting at 7pm at the Mini Israel Complex (organized transportation will depart from Tel Aviv, pre-registration - in favor of anyone who wants to drink freely), featuring approximately 30 participating wineries and tasting their selected wines, during an instant meeting with Winemakers and wineries in the clear and cool air of the Jerusalem Mountains (entrance - NIS 60, including a glass of wine and unlimited tasting. Professional lectures and dedicated tastings - extra charge and pre-registration).

Alongside big and famous wine producers such as Taferberg, Castel, Palam, Barbados and others located in Metah Yehuda, the festival also allows wine enthusiasts and visitors to get acquainted with small boutique wineries such as Katlev, Karma, Jaffa, Reviv, Agur, Citadel and Nebo, which usually lack marketing resources and remain below To the public radar.

Also, this year, the Judas wineries were renewed with great gospel. After many years of lengthy and tedious discussions in various forums about defining wine regions in Israel (as is customary in the world), the members of Metz Yehuda stopped waiting for state institutions, contacted the Ministry of Justice, and were able to register an official trademark on their wine region. Starting in the 2019 harvest, the trademark "regional character" could appear on any wine label containing at least 85% of the grapes grown on the borders of the Judea area marked on the regional map, subdivided into sub-regions - the "Judean Mountains" (the high mountain area, without the Judean Desert) and "The slopes of Judah" (west of the Judean mountains).

The big news is that, for the first time in Israel, a defined wine region is also approved, just like the world's most respected wine regions - Tuscany, Bordeaux, Champagne, Rioja and others - known for their high quality vines and unique wine production methods, so that only the region's name is sufficient to receive a "quality seal" "Lane. The move is expected to introduce a regulatory mechanism to protect regional produce from counterfeiting or "inaccuracy" by anyone trying to ride the reputation of the region's wines, and it will be interesting to follow and see if this opening shot will be the catalyst for marking additional wine regions in the country, such as the Golan Heights, the back of the mountain. The central, the Galilee, the Negev and others, each with their own fingerprint and winemaking qualities.

You can catch up on the festival at the Meta Yehuda tourism department at 8108 * or 02-9958650, at: http://www.tour-yehuda.org.il/articles/63/ and on the Facebook page "Green Heart Tourism Meta Yehuda".

Official tasting

We tasted this time trying to focus on the smaller and lesser known wineries of Meta Yehuda, which to our surprise give Fayette also serious wine quality and not only the "boutique exotic":

In 2014, Raviv Winery - a small family winery in Nes Harim, which produces only 5,000 bottles each vintage. This screen was made by Ophir Raviv, the winery's owner and engineer by profession, from Cabernet grapes, Merlot and a 650-foot-tall grapevine in chalky soil after 24 months of aging in French and American barrels.

In spite of his years the wine shows a dark and deep purple-purple color, and from the glass aromas of good black fruit, new skin, vanilla and a little roasting. The wine body is tannic and velvety and the finish is long. Excellent wine, young for his age (NIS 90).

Zamora 2017, Carma Winery - a tiny winery located between Beit Shemesh and Route 6, and grapes grapes from the vineyards of the Moshavim, some symbolic, hereditary and vine. The winery owners run an agricultural program for Jews living abroad, where they can acquire a right and plant a single fruit tree, be partners in all stages of its development, and of course enjoy its fruits.

The wine, which consists of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes only, is heavy and expresses the fragrance of ripe (cherry) and fleshy fruit. It is smooth and velvety, bodily and alcohol-rich (NIS 90).

Magic 2017, Crane Winery - The Crane Winery does not need to know wine lovers. The town's markets, winery owners and winemakers, have been selling its original wines and charms for years, and with great success. Originally, this wine was composed of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot only (KSSM acronym), but over the years it added more varieties, and this time it already consists of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Patty Verdu "Saddle Stairs", "Wadi" and "Plantation".

The use of wood here is informed and accurate - the wine has aged for only 12 months, and barrels used in secondary. It has a good, floral aroma, herbs, pickles and pickles, and it is juicy and full-bodied with a long residual flavor. Harmonious and magical wine - and the price is a pleasure (NIS 88).

Merlot 17, Nevo Winery - Nevo Hazan and his wines produced in the courtyard of his magical home in a plantation I knew a few years ago. Since then he has grown and developed and started hosting private event groups there as well. His merlot continues to excel - the grapes are harvested in the local vineyard and matured in about 24 months in new French barrels. Line medium color with red and black fruit aromas, alongside green pepper (which characterizes the strain) and coffee. The wine palette is complex, balanced, rich and smooth. It is advisable to hold back when opening for at least two years (NIS 220).
