International Day for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is the least recognized day on our calendar, unfortunately. It is a day that should be given the special status of a true social soul. His existence is bound by reality. A reality that we must work to change.

In the State of Israel, more than 1.4 million people with disabilities live at various levels - about one fifth of the population. "These people" are an integral part of our lives - family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, classmates, we!

National Mental Health Day for the Advancement of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is a worthwhile day, which we will look back on as we did - and we certainly did, but mainly look forward with hope and faith that reality will continue to change and improve.

Let us not allow this day to disperse clichés and slogans into the air about how important it is and how necessary and self-evident it is.

A point of departure based on a deep understanding that the circumstances of life change and also a person who does not have a disability from birth can, in a split second, change his or her life situation. More importantly, the prohibition on accepting a disability condition is not something that defines the person. Connecting these two foundations, which place us all in an equal place and are fundamentally acknowledged in human dignity as a person, may lead to genuine readiness for meaningful actions to change reality.

The change is slow, but it permeates. To lead to a real revolution, creative steps must be taken that will make the reality of integrating disabled workers into the labor market a welcome routine.

Over the past few years, we have witnessed many efforts to promote the employment of disabled people, including through legislation. These processes are first and foremost complex because of the consciousness aspect - the perception that a disabled worker is employed for the sake of kindness and cannot provide an equivalent output to the employer against a non-disabled person, as well as the great fear of instances that the employer may be forced to quit his job.

Accordingly, employers who see social value in employing employees with disabilities will usually do so to a limited extent and not necessarily in areas that can truly exploit the employee's capabilities.

The state should lead and assist in the required revolution through providing incentives for businesses, whether with various tax payments and support for locating and hiring employees. Simple and accessible assistance incentives and processes will make a huge contribution to integrating disabled people in the labor market.

Let's look at reality in the eyes and most importantly - let's decide to change it!
