The SPD elects at its party congress from Friday a new tip. In the future, the management team will also be joined by Juso chairman Kevin Kühnert. He has announced his candidacy for the post of deputy party chairman. He would stand for election at the SPD party congress on Friday in Berlin, said the 30-year-old of the "Rheinische Post".
At the party congress, the delegates must formally confirm Saskia Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans as new party leaders. They had prevailed in the membership vote for the future party leadership against Olaf Scholz and Klara Geywitz.
He was in favor of the fact that the course of the new party chairman finds full backing, Kühnert said. "Anyone who, like me, wants to see faces with Saskia Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans renewal, has a responsibility to support them now." Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans stand for numerous positions that "have always been close to the heart of the party."
Kühnert's candidacy is not surprising. He is considered one of the pioneers of the victory of Esken and Walter Borjans (read more here). He had previously made public that he considers a candidacy for the office as vice-president possible
According to the will of the SPD leadership, there will only be three instead of six deputies in the future. Kühnert spoke in favor of the fact that the former party rival Ralf Stegner and the former Juso boss Johanna Uekermann should play a prominent role in the new SPD presidium. However, Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil, the Saarland SPD leader Anke Rehlinger and Geywitz are also candidates
The decision on whether he will give up the chairmanship of the Jusos, Kühnert wants to leave the SPD youth organization. It would be the first time that a Juso boss has a deputy in the party leadership.
