A pensioner from Japan was arrested after making at least 24,000 phone calls to a cellphone company in an attempt to complain that he had breached his contract - Tokyo Police said Wednesday.

The 71-year-old Akitoshi Akumoto was arrested last week after for eight days making hundreds of calls to the customer service department of Japanese telephone service provider KDDI. However, local media reported that the suspect made thousands more calls from public phones to voice dissatisfaction to the company and insult its employees.

"He demanded that KDDI employees come to apologize to him for breach of contract, and would repeatedly cut off his calls as soon as they answered," a police spokesman said. He added that his arrest was made after a suspicion of "sabotage and fraud of a business" arose.

Japan is seeing a growing number of social problems caused by the rapidly aging population in the country. Veteran drivers often cause fatal car accidents and train operators have reported increases in passenger violence against crew members from elderly customers.
