State officials said swastikas were sprayed on about 100 gravestones in a cemetery located near Strasbourg, eastern France. This is in the background of the vote in parliament in a country which held that anti-Israelism and the denial of the Jewish people's right to the state is a form of anti-Semitism

At least a hundred gravestones in a Jewish cemetery in Strasbourg, eastern France, were vandalized last night (Tuesday) when swastikas were sprayed on them, officials said, cited by local media. The government's regional authority said it was investigating the damage caused to 107 graves in the village of Westhofen in the Rhine region.

The Alsace region is suffering from the growth of racist incidents, with only 80 graves in a Jewish cemetery in Kwazenheim being vandalized in February and spray-painted with swastikas and anti-Semitic slogans. French President Emmanuel Macron then visited the desecrated cemetery, saying that "anyone who did so is unworthy of the French Republic and will be punished." Macron then pledged that "we will act on the matter, apply the law and punish whoever did it."

The case happened when, at the same time, the parliament in France approved a resolution that states that anti-Israelism and the denial of the Jewish people's right to the country is a form of anti-Semitism. The lower house in Parliament approved the law, and also called on the government to join other European countries that adopted the anti-Semitism definition of the International Holocaust Remembrance Task Force. In all, 154 lawmakers supported the resolution and 74 opposed it.

In 2018, 74% of police complaints exceeded antisemitic crimes in France - the home of Europe's largest Jewish community and Muslim community.
