Saskia Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans are to be officially elected at the SPD party congress from Friday in Berlin to the new leadership duo of the SPD - and another staff is waiting: Lars Klingbeil wants to promote again for the post of SPD Secretary General.
Walter-Borjans and Esken had asked him to keep going, Klingbeil said in a video released today. "I realized what I intended to do in the SPD, what I intend to do here in the party headquarters, the way I want to go, that fits together". Therefore, he will again stand for election at the party congress as Secretary General.

- Lars Klingbeil (@larsklingbeil) December 4, 2019The 41-year-old Klingbeil has been in office since December 2017. He is considered a proponent of a continuation of the coalition with the Union. Walter Borjans and Esken are considered critics of the Alliance.
The vote among the SPD members had won Walter Borjans and Esken last Saturday, their confirmation by the delegates is considered a formality. Usually, party leaders have a strong say in the Secretary-General's nomination.
