"We will win": Trump is confident of victory - and warns against abuse of the procedure

2019-12-05T16:59:42.102Z

US President Trump believes that the impeachment proceedings against him initiated by the Democrats are inappropriate: "That's not what our founders had in mind."

Donald Trump firmly believes that he will pass the impeachment trial initiated by the US Democrats as president. The Democrats in the House of Representatives wanted to initiate an impeachment procedure "for nothing," Trump wrote on Twitter. But the Republicans are more united than ever. "We will win!"

.... This wants to be used beyond routine and presumed act of impeachment. That's not what our Founders had in mind. The good thing is that the Republicans have NEVER been more united. We want to win!

Trump also warned that the rarely used instrument of impeachment could in the future be used "routinely" to attack other presidents. "That's not what our founders had in mind."

Democrats are preparing charges - but the Senate finally decides

The Democratic House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, had previously announced the next important step in the impeachment of Trump. She officially called the Washington Congressional Judiciary Committee in Washington to draft charges against Trump.

This is a prerequisite for a later vote in the plenary session of the House of Representatives on a possible impeachment of the President. However, the real decision in such a case generally falls in the US Senate, where Trump's Republicans currently have the majority.

Most recently, several law professors before the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives had called an impeachment procedure justified. The intelligence committee previously said in a report of "overwhelming" burden of proof against Trump.

The trial was triggered by a phone call from the US President to his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Selenskyj on 25 July. In it eTrump Selenskyj suggests investigating ex-vice-president Joe Biden and his son Hunter for alleged involvement in corruption. To enforce this, the US president threatened to withhold military assistance to Ukraine and had Selenskyj offer a meeting in the White House. Trump denies the allegations.
