Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that lawmakers will begin drafting impeachment charges against President Donald Trump for abusing his authority. The military aid to Kiev in opening an investigation against one of the prominent candidates to face him in next year's election, Joe Biden.

"Our democracy is at stake. The president leaves us no choice but to act," the senior Democrat in Congress said. "The president has misused his authority, compromised our national security and is jeopardizing the purity of our elections." Pelosi likened the president to King George III, in which the colonies that founded the United States in 1776 revolted. She said that in the United States, "the people are the king."

Pelosi added that, "Sadly, but confidently and modestly, in loyalty to our founding fathers and with our full heart for America's love, I urge the Chairman today to continue with the impeachment clauses." She referred to Jerrold Nadler, chairman of the Judiciary Committee responsible for drafting the official clauses that would then come up for a vote.

Two officials in the matter told Reuters that the commission may end the drafting process of the charges and transfer them to the House of Representatives as early as next Thursday. The indictment clauses may include abuse of authority, bribery, disruption of court proceedings and congressional work. A source in the matter said Pelosi announced the move after receiving overwhelming support for it at a meeting with Democratic delegates last night.

Trump, for his part, said Democrats "went crazy" and urged them to move quickly if they plan to oust him. The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives should vote by a standard vote in favor of the president's impeachment, after which a Senate impeachment trial will be conducted. However, there is support for two-thirds of the 100 senators, most of whom are Republicans. At this point, there seems to be no reasonable chance that enough Republican supporters will gather in Trump's ouster from the White House.

"Democrats 'doing nothing', left-wing extremists, have just declared they are going to try and oust me for nothing," Trump wrote on Twitter. "The good thing is that the Republicans have never been more united. We will win." The president denies that he has broken the law, and claims a "witch hunt" against him.

Pelosi's announcement came after the House Intelligence Committee released the impeachment investigation report on Tuesday, from which it emerged that the president had used his power to pressure Ukraine to assist him in the 2020 election through the interrogation of Vice President Biden and his son Hunter, while halting $ 400 million in military aid. Trump even condoned the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zalanski to the White House at the inauguration, and his administration even promoted a conspiracy theory that Ukraine, rather than Russia, interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

Hunter Biden joined the board of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma while his father was vice president. Trump blames the bidders for corruption, without showing any basis for it. They reject his words. The aid was transferred to Ukraine in September after the affair was revealed to the public.

According to the 300-page report, the July 25 conversation between Trump and Zalansky was part of a months-long campaign designed to benefit the US President personally and politically. With the intelligence man's complaint about the call, Trump tried to disrupt the impeachment investigation and instructed witnesses and government officials to ignore the summonses to testify on the issue. In addition, the president publicly attacked and threatened witnesses who took part in the investigation, including the intelligence man.

Republicans have issued their own report in which they completely defended the president's actions against Ukraine. In addition, the Republican Party has accused Democrats of accelerating the president's impeachment without evidence that Trump acted incorrectly.

Trump's impeachment investigation report: Abused his authority to pressure Ukraine

The report went to the House of Representatives yesterday, and at a hearing, three constitutional law experts summoned by Democratic lawmakers said Trump's conduct represented offenses that, according to the U.S. Constitution, could be ousted by a president based on them. On the other hand, a fourth Republican-appointed expert said the impeachment process was rushed and sloppy.

Democrats on the committee said they may go beyond Trump's relationship with Ukraine, and include the president's efforts to disrupt former Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller's investigation. He questioned the Russian intervention in the 2016 election and the contacts between Trump's campaign and Moscow. They did not make clear whether this would lead to a separate charge against the president.
