Mekdad: Syria will continue to provide support to UNRWA in order to ensure the continuation of a decent life for Palestine refugees

Deputy Foreign Minister and Expatriates Dr. Faisal al-Miqdad received today the acting Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Christian Saunders.

Mekdad expressed his satisfaction with the decision of the UN General Assembly to renew the mandate of UNRWA for three years to come by an overwhelming majority of UN member states in favor of the renewal in return for a vote by the United States and (Israel) against the resolution, which would continue to support the cause of Palestine refugees and alleviate their suffering, especially in Attempts and pressure exerted by Washington and (Israel) continued in line with their ongoing conspiracy to liquidate the Palestinian issue and the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, especially the right of return.

The Deputy Minister affirmed that Syria will continue to provide the necessary support to UNRWA in order to ensure the continuation of a dignified life for the Palestinian refugees in Syria and enhance cooperation between the two sides on the basis of confidence and belief in the importance of defending the rights of the Palestinian people.

Mekdad expressed Syria's condemnation of the policies of the racist Zionist entity towards the Palestinian people that contravene international law and UN resolutions, including its inhuman attacks on the Gaza Strip and its continued construction of settlements in the occupied territories at the expense of the Palestinian people.

For his part, Saunders expressed his gratitude and thanks for the facilities provided by the Syrian government in particular for the organization to carry out its tasks and carry out its activities in support of Palestinian refugees and the rehabilitation of schools and service centers in Syria, especially destroyed by terrorists.

Saunders outlined the efforts of UNRWA and the UN Secretariat to address the financial crisis of the organization by relying on new resources by encouraging some donor countries around the world to increase their support to UNRWA so that it can continue to carry out its noble humanitarian mission to Palestine refugees in all asylum areas.

The meeting was attended by the Syrian side Abdel-Moneim Annan, the director of the organizations department, Osama Ali, director of the deputy minister's office, Dr. Khawla Yousef from the organizations department, Yamen Badr from the deputy minister's office, Michael Amania, director of UNRWA affairs in Syria, and Basma Qasimia, protocol director at UNRWA.
