Moscovici in Rome, ahead of the Mes, confidence in the maneuver

2019-12-05T15:59:17.244Z

A 'two days' in Rome which is the last official visit of the European Commissioner for Economic Affairs Pierre Moscovici. Who chose Italy because "I love this essential country for the European Union". But also to discuss the reform of the European Stability Mechanism (MES), with a spur to the government to overcome political divisions. And to take stock of the budget law where "there is a risk of non-compliance" but also confidence "that the Italian government is aware of the necessary efforts".
Moscovici has just seen Economy Minister Roberto Gualtieri and before him the premier Giuseppe Conte. The President of Confindustria, Vincenzo Boccia, was ready to meet (yesterday he was received by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella) when he introduced the entrance of the Italian representation of the European Commission to speak with journalists. And the reform of the Mes, indispensable to complete the banking union and on which with Gualtieri there have been "several convergences" even if the passages on the restructuring of the debt that agitate Italian politics, inevitably falls on the table. "We have avoided a harmful drift that others would have wanted, an automatism in debt restructuring," explains Moscovici. The result of the negotiation, in the light of "common sense" and if one does not want to "distort reality", is "a more fluid dialogue with private investors". But "no one wanted to put Italy under protection", rather the draft reform approved by the Eurogroup in June is an acceptable compromise "advantageous for Italy". Because it represents a step forward towards the completion of the banking union ": finally it unlocks the use of the Mes cone 'backstop' to finance the resolution fund of the banks giving" an aid to the Italian system ".
