A 23-year-old rape victim is fighting for her life after she was set on fire in northern India. The woman was attacked near the railway station in the state of Uttar Pradesh, with which she was scheduled to go to a hearing on a complaint she filed against two men alleging she was raped last March.

She is in a human condition in the hospital, where they are trying to treat the severe burns on her body. According to the police statement, five men, including the two men suspected of rape, were arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault. Local media reported that while she was on her way to the train, a group of men attacked her and dragged her to a nearby field where they set her on fire.

Doctors treating her at the Lokkenov hospital said she received treatment for 90% of burns and would soon be flown by an air ambulance to New Delhi for better medical care.

The incident happened in Onnau County, which recently made headlines due to another rape case. After police launched a murder investigation last July against a ruling party lawmaker, after the woman accused of rape was seriously injured in a car accident. Two of her aunts were killed and her lawyer was also injured.

The latest incident has sparked widespread outrage in India, which has yet to be reassured by a murder case and shocking rape that occurred less than a week ago, as a 27-year-old veterinarian in Hyderabad, southern Ransa, was set on fire on November 27. Demonstrations were held across the country after the raped remains of the rapist were found after disappearing last week.

Nearly one hundred rape cases are reported in India daily according to the latest crime statistics. Throughout cities and villages, women, children and sometimes men are also subjected to brutal attacks. Many of them do not even report, and certainly do not make headlines.

In recent days, some officials have urged women to return home earlier or to avoid using certain shuttles altogether. Activists say the emphasis should be on the change that Indian society has to undergo, and not on how Indian women need to change.
