Three people were killed Friday after an armed man opened fire at a US Navy base in Pensacola, Florida. In addition to them, the shooter was killed. A large number of people were injured and evacuated to the hospital. This is the second shooting event taking place this week at the base of the U.S. Navy.

Eleven people were shot in total, including the two sheriff's deputies who provided the initial response to the incident, with one being the one who neutralized and killed the shooter, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said. One of the officers was shot in the arm and the other in his knee, and both are expected to recover, he added.

The circumstances of the shooting are still unclear. The sheriff did not say whether the shooter belonged to the military and said he did not want to speculate that it was a terrorist incident.

A senior camp officer, Captain Timothy Kinsella, said the base was closed until a new announcement and those still present will remain there until it is safe to vacate.

The base employs more than 16,000 military personnel and 7,400 civilians, according to the camp's website. He is considered one of the most historic naval bases. The camp stretches south-west of the city of Pensacola, and is a major economic factor in the area.
