The British Guardian newspaper considered that the changes imposed by the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman under the allegations of "reforms and openness to the world" revealed rift and contradictions in Saudi society and coincided with fierce campaigns by this system to crush anyone who opposes or criticizes his policies.

In an article prepared by journalist writer Martin Shulov, the Guardian pointed to the existence of contradictions and significant gaps in Saudi society when it comes to the changes brought about by Ibn Salman, stating that “a certain group in Saudi society was calling for similar changes, but in return there is fear and anger towards it, as there are many aspects that the Kingdom is witnessing. Currently by the youth, it does not exceed a kind of expression about the known challenge among the people of this age group, rather than an expression of changes that resulted from the area of new freedom that is permitted.

The newspaper pointed to the escalation of crackdowns and pursuit of opponents of the Saudi regime in parallel with the alleged changes and reforms, where arrests of activists and defenders of rights, especially women's rights, increased, while several activists affirmed that they were subjected to sexual assault and torture and are under arrest.

In the article, the Guardian mimics what Human Rights Watch confirmed last month about the increase in repression and violations since Ibn Salman came to power and indicated in a report that his alleged reforms came at a heavy price with the expansion of detention and torture campaigns targeting opponents of his policies.

In its report, the human rights organization pointed out that the Saudi regime launched campaigns to arrest citizens for criticizing their policies peacefully, while practices of holding people in unofficial detention centers included torture and ill-treatment, in addition to arbitrary detention without trial, charge, or clear legal procedures, in addition to other abusive practices including It includes extorting financial assets in exchange for releasing detainees away from any legal procedure and requesting the death penalty for acts that do not resemble any recognized crime.
