The statement stated that the former chairman of the Law Society of Hong Kong was very shocked by the petrol bombs and arson fire in the High Court and the Court of Final Appeal. Referencing the rule of law and judicial independence has always been the cornerstone of Hong Kong society. As a lawyer, we have a responsibility to defend the rule of law. "In the past few decades, we have witnessed that the rule of law in Hong Kong is highly respected at the social and international levels in Hong Kong. The basic requirement of the spirit of the rule of law is that judges are impartial and free from any outside interference in the trial of cases."
The statement severely condemns any attempt to exert pressure on the court by violence or other misconduct, and reiterates that Hong Kong is a society ruled by law. Everyone must trust the rule of law, respect the rule of law, and safeguard the rule of law.
A total of 13 former presidents of the Law Society participated in the joint signing. The current Hong Kong Jockey Club Chairman Zhou Yongjian and Legislative Councillor He Junyao did not join.
