An investigation into the deadly shooting incident Friday at the Florida Naval Training Center was formally designated as a terror investigation yesterday (Monday) as new details emerged about Muhammad Sa'id a-Shamrani, the Saudi student who carried out the shooting.

The incident investigation revealed that the Saudi student filed a formal complaint earlier this year against one of his base instructors, who insulted him in front of other students, and laughed at his mustache. In his complaint, A-Shamrani said the instructor called him "porn-stash" in front of about ten other students. "I was furious because he said it in front of the class," the Saudi student wrote in his complaint. The document was reviewed and verified by a person who spoke to the student after the complaint was filed.

The FBI declined to comment on the same complaint filed in April, and Jacksonville Police Chief Rachel Rojas said investigators are still looking for a motive for the attack. "There is nothing to suggest that a class event had anything to do with the shooting, which happened just over seven months later," Rojas said.

However, very little is known about A-Shamrani's life in Florida during his months at the Navy base, and the April case appeared to be significant because two American students helped him file the complaint, according to the person he spoke with after he filed the complaint. According to him, a conservative reported that the confrontation came at the end of a meteorology class, with instructor James Day asking if students had any questions before graduation. At this point, the non-conservative guide contacted him, asked if he had any questions, and called him the insulting name.

"He laughed and kept asking, 'What? Haven't you seen a porn star before?'" A-shamrani wrote in his complaint. "After not answering, he left the topic," he added. Brian Busey, the company president where the instructor was employed, declined to discuss the details of the incident in the classroom, but said the company addressed the issue when the complaint was filed in April. He said the company is cooperating with the FBI investigation into the shooting. The guide against whom the complaint was filed, James Day, also declined to comment.

Officials involved in the investigation said they were continuing to speak to anyone who might have contacted a-Shamrani. They said the investigators were acting on the assumption that he was acting alone, but continued to investigate whether he might have had any help.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the incident brings up more details, such as the fact that Shamrani hosted a dinner earlier this week during which he watched along with three of his friends in videos documenting mass shootings. A few days earlier, he and three other Saudi military trainees were in New York and visited several museums and the Rockefeller Center. While there is no indication that the trip was more than a sightseeing tour, nonetheless, a few dozen FBI agents and detectives and the New York Police Department worked to learn everything they could about the visit, which took about four days.

At this time it is unclear whether the April class event will play a major role in the investigation. As part of a terrorist investigation, US authorities will also try to determine if there was a political or ideological motive behind the shooting.
