Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations Office and International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Hussam El-Din Ala, warned of the danger of some of the member societies of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies illegal activities on Syrian soil once again demanding that those associations be stopped from these illegal practices.

Ambassador Ala expressed regret that the international response to these humanitarian situations remains hostage to political approaches, double standards and targeted international investigation mechanisms that lack political and legal legitimacy and seek to serve narrow political agendas and interests, explaining that addressing traditional and emerging challenges that characterize wars and armed conflicts requires addressing their root causes and that ensuring compliance with the law International humanitarian law requires the abandonment of double standards in dealing with its violations and ensuring compliance with the rules of international law and the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter on which the international system is based.

Ambassador Ala pointed out that the increasing external support for terrorist groups and their ability to control entire cities and destroy their infrastructure and use their residents as human shields were essential factors in transforming hostilities towards urban areas and imposing unprecedented challenges in dealing with them and with the associated human suffering.

Ambassador Ala reaffirmed Syria's firm commitment to promoting respect for international humanitarian law and the dissemination of its principles within the framework of the international conference and its aspiration to succeed in agreeing to adopt its decisions stating that in 2015 Syria restructured the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law headed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants and includes representatives from the relevant ministries The Syrian Arab Red Crescent and the International Committee of the Red Cross in an effort to activate their efforts and organized workshops and seminars with academics specializing in international humanitarian law for judges and legal advisers at the Ministry of Justice and diplomats. Ambassador Ala pointed out that Syria is continuing its efforts to integrate international humanitarian law into the curricula of various levels and in its efforts to harmonize national legislation with its legal obligations arising from the conventions related to international humanitarian law that have been ratified or acceded to by the Syrian Arab Republic.
