Photo: Reuters, Edit: Lear SpiegelerA security breach has revealed the details of at least 15 million bank accounts in Iran - the New York Times reported on Tuesday, according to which the extent of the threat was revealed after the gasoline protest during which hundreds of branches were set alight across the country. Account details have been posted on social networks, causing outrage among customers and forcing the government to recognize that there is a problem. According to local media and lawyers representing some of the casualties, this is the most serious security breach in the history of the Islamic Republic.
The loophole, which hit customers of Iran's three largest banks, is likely to further shock the already suffering US sanctions economy, and it occurred after the severe repression of the latest protest, which quickly swept into violence and took on political character.
