Murder in the Small Tiergarten: alleged perpetrator probably had helpers in Berlin

2019-12-11T17:01:56.849Z

The murder of a Georgian in the Kleiner Tiergarten in Berlin still raises questions. The fact that the alleged perpetrator acted alone, a representative of the Attorney General considers unlikely.

In the opinion of the investigators, at least one helper must have helped to prepare for the murder of a Georgian in Berlin. That said a representative of the Federal Public Prosecutor in the Interior Committee of the Bundestag, according to participants in a non-public meeting.

Accordingly, the perpetrator traveled at the earliest one day before the fatal shots on Zelimkhan Khangoshvili from Warsaw to the German capital. Within a few hours, it would be simply impossible to spy on the place of residence and the habits of the victim and to plan the escape. It is also unclear who procured the suspect, who had flown on 17 August from Moscow to Paris and from there on to Poland, the type G-26 murder weapon.

Brand new is the assumption about a possible helper in the case not. In a press release of the Federal Prosecutor General's Office on December 4, it said: "There is no evidence that the accused was in Berlin before August 22, 2019, the later Tatopfer there spied for the purpose of the attack itself or even the act before Logistically prepared. "

The victim, a 40-year-old Georgian, allegedly fought separatists in the Russian republic of Chechnya. He had been shot from behind in back and head on August 23rd in the Kleiner Tiergarten in Berlin. A suspect has been caught, is in custody and silent to the allegations. The Federal Prosecutor's Office suspects state agencies in Russia or in the Chechen Republic of having ordered the murder. Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the person shot as "bandits" and "murderers".

Federal government contradicts Putin

Among other things, the Georgian was on a list of suspected terrorists, the Russian domestic intelligence service FSB had transmitted to German authorities some time ago. Putin had accused Germany of not having extradited him despite requests to do so. This contradicted the federal government. "A request for extradition of Russia to the victim is not known to the federal government," said a spokesman for the Ministry of Justice.

Khangoshvili had applied for asylum in Germany. His request was rejected. Even with a lawsuit against the refusal, he had no success. It was rejected in January 2018. He then appealed, the trial was still ongoing.

The case has heavily impacted German-Russian relations. The Federal Government accuses Russia of lacking cooperation in the Enlightenment and therefore rejected two Russian diplomats. The SPD domestic politician Uli Grötsch said after the meeting of the Interior Committee: "It must not be without drastic consequences if a foreign state sends a killer to Germany to murder someone here."
