This time it will be shorter: everything to know ahead of the 2020 elections

After the 22nd Knesset voted for its dissolution, the third elections for the 23rd Knesset took place. They will be held on March 2, 2020, but this time, unlike most elections in Israel, the election campaign will be shorter than ever and will only last 82 days.

January 2 is the deadline for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to submit the request for parliamentary immunity from prosecution to Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein. On January 8, the official ballot box will be published, after being given to the electorate to make sure it appears there. The register is valid.

Later, on January 14, the parties contesting elections will submit the list of candidates on their behalf to the Central Election Commission in a two-day process. Until that date, the parties will be required to determine the nature of the lists for the Knesset. In Likud, for example, the party center confirmed earlier this week that no primaries will be held for the party list and that the list will be frozen, but by tomorrow the center will be convened again and is expected to confirm the primaries for party leadership on December 26.

As soon as the lists have been submitted, the Central Electoral Commission will begin examining the eligibility of candidates for each of the lists. The public will be given one week to petition against this or that list. On Feb. 1, the Election Commission will publish lists of approved candidates for voting, and ten days later, voter announcements will be sent to voters across the country.

On February 17, two weeks before the planned election, broadcasts on television and radio will begin. Two days later, on February 19, the ballot will be opened by Israeli delegations abroad. On February 22, lists of candidates for the Knesset will be officially published and on March 2, elections will take place.

The electoral commission must announce the results of the official election by March 10, within eight days of the end of the vote. The results of the appeal can be filed until March 24, 22 days after the election.
