(CNN) - TIME magazine annually announces its Person of the Year. The one selected for 2019 was the young environmental activist, Greta Thunberg.

“Thunberg is not the leader of any political party or defense group. She is not the first to sound the alarm about the climate crisis or the most qualified to solve it. She is not scientific or political. She does not have access to traditional levers of influence: she is not a multimillionaire or princess, nor a pop star, nor even an adult. She is an ordinary teenager who, by gathering the courage to tell the truth to power, became the icon of a generation. By clarifying an abstract danger with penetrating indignation, Thunberg became the most convincing voice on the most important issue facing the planet, ”writes TIME.
