Here you will find the most important news of the day, the most popular stories of SPIEGEL + and tips for your end of workday.

The theme of the day: Europe's Green Deal

Carbon neutral by 2050 - EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has presented the plan for this goal for the EU today. The "European Green Deal" - not to be confused with the New Deal of US President Franklin D. Roosevelt or the "Green New Deal", for which the Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is currently campaigning in the US - is intended to help European economies make the next 30 years independent of fossil fuels.

In order for no new greenhouse gases from Europe to reach the atmosphere from 2050, the energy supply, industrial production, transport and agriculture must be turned around. From the Leyens "Green Deal" is something like the timetable - but not in detail elaborated package of measures.

The first legislative initiatives are due by June 2020. By 2023, Member States should update their climate plans. By 2030 emissions are expected to be 50 to 55 percent below 1990 levels. An interim destination.

The European Parliament had already demanded that a year ago. The EU Commission, as the only European initiative, can now equip the goal with measures and money. Now it depends on whether all 28 Member States are involved. Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary have no interest.

German industry is also unconvinced by von Leyens plans and fears for international competitiveness. My colleague Michael Kröger wishes in his comment more entrepreneurial spirit from the bosses instead of the complainers: "The later we start, the more expensive it gets."

The number of the day: 220,000 pounds

It is commonly called just the "Travolta dress": the night blue velvet dress that Princess Diana wore in 1985 while dancing with John Travolta. Now it has been auctioned for 220,000 pounds (262,000 euros). The strapless design by London designer Victor Edelstein was one of the best known robes of Diana, who died in a car accident in 1997.

My evening: the recommendations for your end of workday

WDR / Frank Dicks

From the movie "The King of Cologne"

What you could look like: You also come from the Rhineland? Then you know for sure how that goes with the "short way to service", the "Rhenish interpretation of the principle of networks," writes Anja Rützel in her criticism. You are not coming? Never mind! You should look at the satire "The King of Cologne" anyway. On the ARD theme evening "Kölner Klüngel" she tells the story of the Arcandor bankruptcy. And anyway: "corruption, carnival, on top of it a round of Kölsch", who can resist it?

I wish you a nice finishing time.
