(CNN Spanish) - This Wednesday, Unesco included bachata, a musical genre from the Dominican Republic, on its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The election was announced during the meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which takes place in Bogotá from December 9 to 14.

Bachata is a genus that derives from the fusion of bolero, son, chachachá and merengue, according to Unesco.

“For the Dominican people, bachata music and dance are native cultural expressions always present at community celebrations or social gatherings. As a general rule, bachata lyrics express deep and visceral feelings of love, passion and nostalgia, ”Unesco said in a statement.

Among the greatest exponents of the genre is Juan Luis Guerra, Romeo Santos, Prince Royce, Aventura, Frank Reyes, Andy Andy, among others.

Juan Luis Guerra celebrated on his Instagram account the designation of the genre within the Unesco list.

Other genres such as reggae, from Jamaica; las tamboradas, from Spain; the couplets, of the Colombian-Venezuelan plains; The merengue, the Cuban rumba, the Colombian vallenato and the Cuban point have received the same designation in the last decade.
