The Chile Army announced Thursday that it had found human remains and remains from the Hercules plane that had 38 people as it crashed en route to Antarctica after two days of exploration. The cause of the accident is still unknown. Among the passengers were 17 crew members and 21 passengers, including three civilians. Air Force commander Arturo Marino announced there were no survivors.

The remains were found 30 km south of where the plane was lost. The military is investigating if the parts actually belong to the transport aircraft. The Hercules 130C plane took off at 16:55 local time from the southern city of Punta Arenas, when its operators lost contact shortly after 6 p.m. An alert state was announced after the loss of communication with the aircraft, and detection and rescue teams were called to handle the case. The aircraft traveled to the destination with the aim of providing logistical support to the army base on the frozen continent.

According to the general, everything was routine on the flight until it disappeared from the radar. Fighter jets were sent to a wider search area, after large waves in the frozen "Dark Passage" and low clouds made the task a day earlier.
